TL;DR. You can get ordered Mac window layout without turning System Integrity Protection off. Ribbon moves windows through the Accessibility API, the same permission screen readers use. SIP stays on. No kernel extension.
Direct answer
If you want yabai-like control (columns, focus moves, stacks) but you will not disable SIP on a work Mac, use an Accessibility-only manager. Ribbon is built that way: menu-bar app, one strip per display, widths you set, SIP untouched.
The trade-off is real. A few apps ignore resize requests. Ribbon stops fighting those apps after repeated failures and lists them under Apps.
Why some tools ask for SIP off
Advanced tiling managers sometimes inject into other processes or hook private APIs. Apple blocks that while SIP is on, so install docs tell you to reboot into recovery and change the policy.
That is fine on a personal research machine. It is a hard sell on a company laptop. Accessibility-only tools stay inside the public path Apple already exposes for assistive apps.
What you get with Ribbon instead
| Capability | Ribbon |
|---|---|
| Layout model | Horizontal strip; windows keep size |
| Stacks | Two windows in one column |
| Focus and move | ⌃+⌥ arrows and chords |
| Gestures | ⌥ + two-finger swipe by default |
| Security | Accessibility only; SIP stays on |
| Quit | Restores prior frames |
You do not get every scripting surface a SIP-off yabai setup can offer. If you need that depth and you own the machine policy, yabai remains the deeper toolbox. If you need layout without changing security policy, start with Accessibility.
Limits to expect
Some apps (including System Settings) refuse arbitrary widths. Full-screen Spaces stay alone; Ribbon does not pull them into the strip. Sheets and save panels float above the row.
If Rectangle, Magnet, or another manager is also running, quit those first so two tools are not fighting the same windows.
Setup path
- Download Ribbon.
- Grant Accessibility when prompted (setup walkthrough).
- Confirm Stage Manager is off if the strip keeps restacking.
- Swipe with three fingers for the strip; clear macOS trackpad conflicts in Mac Setup.
